# Story So Far

In the dense forest of Whisperwood, a skilled ranger encountered a band of thieves quarreling over a stolen merchant's chest. What began as a careful ambush quickly escalated into a violent confrontation when the ranger's arrow alerted the scarred leader and his companions to the danger.

The ranger proved formidable in combat, killing one bandit named Gareth with a well-placed arrow and wounding another called Dren with a shoulder strike. Yet as the ranger retreated deeper into the forest, their injuries mounted—a slashed forearm and later a cut to the side—while the bandits pursued with determination.

During their escape, the ranger retrieved crucial items from an abandoned chest: a silver merchant's seal bearing the insignia of the Thornhaven Merchant Guild, marked with a ship, crossed keys, and a triangle symbol. They also found a coin purse, silk cloth, and a plain wooden box with no apparent function. Most intriguingly, the ranger discovered an ancient cloth tape inscribed with cryptic symbols referencing "three keys"—a mystery they had no time to unravel while hunted.

The pursuit proved relentless. The scarred leader, determined and commanding, eventually cornered the ranger with the wounded Dren at his side. Rather than face execution, the ranger made a calculated gamble: they offered their considerable skills and knowledge as a ranger to the bandit leader, acknowledging the loss of Gareth while pointing out that the injured Dren left the group weakened. The leader, practical if suspicious, recognized the ranger's value and reluctantly agreed to the arrangement—though not before making clear that obedience would be demanded and betrayal would be fatal.
