Story So Far
The narrative begins as Dr. Hart and Dr. Okafor establish a collaboration to investigate a viral anomaly, with Okafor allowing Hart to remain at the checkpoint in exchange for shared lab resources and detailed sample analysis. Together they examine case files and discover an unusual pattern in viral replication, particularly low brainstem concentrations that match across multiple subjects' data.
Hart is introduced to Subject 1, a woman bearing a faded bruise and a laboratory designation, whom Okafor has been monitoring as part of his research. Despite the clinical circumstances, Hart treats Subject 1 with genuine kindness, earning her trust as they review the atypical data surrounding her infection and recovery.
The team moves to a secured mobile lab where they prepare to sequence Subject 1's blood sample while discussing past difficulties with interrupted research. Okafor reveals a troubling discovery: a second subject died unexpectedly on day fourteen from a cardiac event linked to brainstem tissue anomalies, news that deeply concerns Subject 1, who is herself on day eleven of infection.
Subject 1 begins recounting her symptom progression in detail—a headache at the skull base, followed by fever and motor lag, then a notable episode on day four where she experienced severe motor dysfunction and temporary inability to recognize faces. She has maintained meticulous notes of her condition, which Okafor reviews with growing attention to the divergence points in her recovery compared to the deceased subject.
As the team analyzes the data, Subject 1 produces a second page of her medical report that Okafor had not previously seen, and later reveals a detailed journal documenting her experiences from days seven through eleven. Her entries describe visions, persistent headaches, and altered cognition—suggesting the virus may be fundamentally rebuilding her cognitive processes rather than simply degrading them.
The atmosphere grows tense when Subject 1 discloses sensitive information she has recorded separately, fearing exposure given Okafor's authority over the checkpoint. Okafor's composure wavers as a tablet alert arrives, and he confesses to the group a troubling truth: three weeks prior, he reported a subject with similar brainstem anomalies to his regional coordinator, only to have that subject transferred without proper documentation. He now suspects the coordinator may be tracking Hart's location.
The group discovers that a broadcast on a locked radio frequency has been actively seeking a virologist traveling west on Interstate 40—clearly identifying Hart. With the radio potentially compromising their location, Subject 1 asks if Hart possesses the critical research data. Okafor then reveals that the transfer was conducted using only a case number, depersonalizing the individual in the process, and identifies Vasquez as the regional coordinator with authority over personnel decisions. Subject 1 adds a final detail: a man has been asking about neurological survivors in the area.
