Story So Far

Maggie, favoring a painful hip, approaches the Hendersons' house on a quiet Silver Creek street late at night, moving stealthily through tall grass to reach the porch. Mr. Henderson opens the door cautiously after she urgently requests to use his rotary phone, then locks the door behind her as she limps to the kitchen. Maggie calls Mrs. Chen at Rosie's Diner, confirms she is safe, learns a woman had searched the diner for Maggie, and instructs Mrs. Chen to stay inside and lock up. Mr. Henderson then alerts Maggie that the same woman is approaching the porch steps, and Maggie slips out through a gate into the alley behind the houses despite her hip pain.

In the alley, Maggie hides behind a dumpster while Mr. Henderson and the woman conduct a perimeter sweep. The woman has pale waxy skin and large pupils, carries a blue-light-emitting device, and requests medical transport via a lapel device, which is denied by command. She physically restrains Maggie, detects an anomalous neural pattern, and reports it to a superior who orders her to cease contact and await a specialized containment team arriving in twelve minutes.

Maggie attempts to shift and escape but falls, injuring her hip further, and the woman pins her down on the gravel. The woman reports non-compliance and requests chemical sedation repeatedly, but command denies it each time, ordering continued physical restraint. A male agent arrives, confirms the subject is secured, checks Maggie's pulse, and reports stable vitals. Maggie is bound with rope, with the woman holding her shoulder and the male agent blocking escape near a fence. Maggie kicks the woman, causing her to stumble and drop her device, but the male agent pins Maggie down with pressure to her wrist and back. Maggie's health declines with shallow breathing, numb limbs, and blurring vision as the agents await transport, reported at intervals as fifteen, twelve, nine, and finally seven minutes away, with footsteps approaching.
