At 12:47 AM during the third such incident in one week, a black sedan with obscured plates idles outside. The diner phone rings and Maggie grabs it, hitting her hip on the counter and dropping the receiver. A distorted voice warns her to stop looking, then the line dies. The sedan speeds away. Mrs. Chen, the diner's owner, tells Maggie she received the same call three nights ago.
Strange phenomena continue inside the diner: rattling cups, flickering lights, a fluttering notepad, a swinging phone receiver, and a cold draft from a door that was previously closed. She turns and walks away alone into the dark street. The female agent gives a final warning via lapel device, then the alley goes quiet. The sedan idles in the parking lot.
